HATTERAS, N.C. — Dare County officials and the North Carolina Department of Transportation have announced a staged reentry plan for Hatteras Island following a mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Erin. N.C. Highway 12 reopened at noon Saturday with reentry restrictions.

The staged reentry prioritizes safe access for residents, property owners, and essential personnel before visitors are allowed back. Permanent residents and essential personnel for critical businesses, including grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, gas stations, property management, building supply stores, and hotels, can return with a valid reentry permit or government-issued ID showing a Hatteras Island address.
