SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — One person is dead after a fire broke out in Southington early Monday morning, officials said.

The Southington Fire Department was called to a home on Chaffee Lane around 2:30 a.m. Monday, on the report of a fire. Responding crews found a column of smoke showing and saw fire on the left side of the home.

Fire crews began an exterior attack to knock down the fire before they entered the home, beginning a search for anyone who may be inside. Crews found a fire in multiple rooms.

One person was still inside the home and had succumbed to their injuries, police said. Fire officials identified the victim on Wednesday as Stephen Chaplin, 74. No other injuries were reported.
