BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Gov. Kathy Hochul met with school leaders, parents and students from around Western New York on Monday to discuss plans to implement cell phone restrictions this school year.
The roundtable took place at Niagara Falls High School and included representatives from Niagara Falls and Lackawanna school districts, who both already have restrictions in place.
The Distraction-Free Schools law was signed by Hochul in May and calls for "bell-to-bell" restrictions for kindergarteners through 12th graders statewide, meaning students cannot use smartphones and "internet-enabled personal devices" on school grounds for the whole school day, including lunch and study hall classes.
Under the law, schools are able to create their own methods of storing cell phones during the day.
