CHICAGO — State and city leaders united Downtown Monday to call on President Donald Trump to keep federal troops out of Chicago.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and others denounced a Washington Post report that the Pentagon has been preparing for weeks to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to Chicago as early as September.

Pritzker reiterated in a press conference Monday that neither he, Johnson or local and state police have been alerted about a federal troop deployment to Chicago.

“If this was really about fighting crime and making the streets safe, what possible justification could the White House have for planning such an exceptional action without any conversations or consultations with the governor, the mayor or the police,”
