FORT MADISON (WGEM) - In a few weeks, Fort Madison residents will have the opportunity to go to the City Cemetery and help restore headstones.
Starting at 4 p.m. on Sept. 15, multiple headstones will be cleaned and restored to their former glory. The Fort Madison City Cemetery is the oldest within the city, and many of the family members are no longer alive to keep up with them.
“We have a lot of our founding fathers of our community that are buried in our cemetery, here at the city cemetery, and so this is part of historic preservation, and we are excited to have that opportunity to do something like this,” said Laura Liegois, Fort Madison city manager.
Organizers are partnering with the Lee County Pioneer Cemetery Commission to educate people about proper ways to restore headstones.
