CORONACA, S.C. (WBTV) - Eleven earthquakes were recorded in the same South Carolina area within a 65-hour period that stretched from Saturday to Monday.
the United States Geological Survey (USGS) showed the quakes had epicenters a few miles northwest of Coronaca, up by Lake Greenwood. The first of the 11 struck around 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 23, while the last was recorded around 7 p.m. on Aug. 25.
The earthquakes registered anywhere from 1.7 to 3.0 on the Richter Scale, which measures magnitude.
A couple of the quakes -- which were 2.9 and 3.0-magnitudes, respectively -- triggered moderate to strong shaking. Both of those struck early Saturday morning. The 3.0-magnitude earthquake was felt as far away as Texas, New York and Rhode Island.
