CHICAGO — The Chicago Reader is set to be acquired by Portland-based media company Noisy Creek, a press release announced Tuesday.
The move serves as a reprieve from the Reader’s years-long struggles with financial hardship; earlier this year, the paper laid off six non-union staffers in a sudden move to reduce costs to avoid closure.
Now, with Noisy Creek’s ownership, the Reader sits at the vanguard of a new potential path to sustainability for local journalism.
