THERESA, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Wadsworth laboratory of the New York State Department of Health reported that a bobcat tested positive for rabies after entering a residence through an open door and attacked two people in the Town of Theresa.

According to the Jefferson County Public Health Service, the bobcat was dispatched. JCPHS submitted the animal for rabies testing. Two people have begun preventative rabies treatment. There are no known domestic animal exposures.

This is the thirteenth animal to test positive for rabies in Jefferson County this year, said JCPHS. Rabies in bobcats is very rare.
