QUINCY (WGEM) - After being tabled five months ago , the Quincy City Council voted to continue the 1% grocery tax.
Five months ago, the Quincy City Council voted to table continuing the 1% grocery tax in Quincy.
“We can wait longer, we can inform the public, we can decide if this is the right move or not,” Alderwoman Kelly Mays said in March.
Since its inception, the tax’s revenue would go to the state of Illinois. However, the state repealed the tax and left it up to cities to decide to keep it for themselves.
“It’s a large chunk of money and we do need the money,” Mays said after Monday’s vote.
The city attempted to estimate how much revenue would be generated through the tax using four different studies. The consensus was anywhere between $1 million-$1.6 million.
