The Hammond Common Council voted 6-3 on Monday against advancing an ordinance that would have allowed and regulated golf carts on public roadways in the city's Robertsdale neighborhood.
The legislation would have allowed an individual with a valid driver's license to operate a golf cart on city streets and alleys after obtaining a $50 street use permit from the city. Golf carts would have remained prohibited on Indianapolis Boulevard and Calumet Avenue, as well as on sidewalks, bike paths and other areas where motor vehicles are not allowed.
The draft ordinance also included penalties for golf cart users who violate the bill's provisions. Anyone operating a golf cart out of compliance with local regulations would have faced a $100 fine for their first offense, a $250 fine fo
