HANNIBAL (WGEM) - Hannibal firefighters are on the scene of a house fire on Sycamore Street early Tuesday morning.
Crews are using a backhoe to tear down the house as of 6:30 a.m.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 4 a.m., and by around 5:40, no flames were visible, but the house continued to billow smoke.
The house’s owner said the resident and his dog were able to safely leave the home after waking to the sound of fire and the smell of smoke. However, his possessions in the house were destroyed. The dog, a brown lab-pitbull mix, bolted after escaping the home, and the resident is asking for help locating it.
Hannibal fire chief Ryan Neisen said the cause is unknown, and a state fire marshal is investigating
A portion of Sycamore Street remains closed.
