ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The cause of Monday’s massive explosion in north St. Louis County remains under investigation , but safety experts say it’s a reminder that everyday appliances inside homes can also pose risks if not properly maintained.
Two of the most common concerns are carbon monoxide, which is poisonous, and natural gas, which can be explosive if it leaks and ignites.
Appliances like furnaces, water heaters, and stoves often run on natural gas. When that gas doesn’t burn completely, it can produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous byproduct, experts say.
Trevor Miller with Classic Aire Care says annual inspections are one of the best ways to prevent problems.
Technicians check gas fittings, valves and shutoffs to make sure there are no leaks while a furnace or
