EUREKA, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Construction noises and crews dot the streets of Old Town Eureka. But they’re not just improving the roads, they’re trying to keep local businesses from bailing water out of their main floors.

A year ago, the City of Eureka announced it would put in the two flood walls, designed to stop damages from river backups and floods on parts of the city.

Sean Flower, the mayor, said the flood walls were put into a “couple of strategic areas.” One, which is nearly completed, focused on the water sewage plant - raising the walls and protecting it from flooding along Forby Creek.

The second is designed to protect Old Town’s business district from flooding on Flat Creek - all tied to flooding situations on the Meramec.
