Stillwater will host the Governor's Fishing Opener for the first time next spring.
Gov. Tim Walz announced on Tuesday that the annual event will take place on May 8 and 9, 2026 in Stillwater.
The event will mark the 78th Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener, held since 1948 as a way to promote and celebrate the state's tourism and recreation industries. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Explore Minnesota and the Governor's Office team up on the event each year.
This could be Walz's final fishing opener as Minnesota's governor. He hasn't yet announced whether he will seek a third term next November, or whether he will run for president in 2028.
