West Iredell’s varsity football team didn’t just get new uniforms this season.

The Warriors’ helmets received a bit of a makeover too. The Indian spear decal adorning their headgear had become a staple of the program, but second-year head coach Sean Fitzgerald approached team leaders about potentially changing that. The players embraced the idea of a logo alteration.

“We're excited about it," Fitzgerald said. "I want them to feel good about what they’re wearing and things like that. So we did a little bit of research.”

An old West Iredell helmet, worn from 1988-92, appeared in the office of assistant coach George Saffos. It featured an Indian head. Fitzgerald and company adopted a variation of it as part of their new look.
