A man has died after being struck by a bullet from a Richland County deputy Tuesday morning.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to address the incident. Lott said deputies responded to a report of shots fired at construction workers in the 300 block of Ovanta Road, just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 26.

According to Lott, callers said that man was standing in his yard with a gun and several shots had been fired. Deputies then arrived on the scene and made contact with the suspect inside the house through a window. Deputies attempted to deescalate the situation, and that's when Lott says the suspect raised his gun and pointed at deputies.
