Arizona's economic juggernaut has been slowing, casting shadows over job prospects around the state.

The unemployment rate and layoffs have been rising a bit, while job growth and help-wanted postings have stagnated. A recession could make the employment picture worse, if that materializes.

But the slowdown hasn't been felt much, at least yet, among Arizona's largest employers. These top 100 companies account for nearly one in five jobs statewide. They operate in diverse industries and employ people in a range of specialties, reflecting the maturing of the state's economy away from agriculture, mining, manufacturing and housing. Many of these businesses pay well and offer generous benefits.
