Fines for speeding in Nebraska will increase on Sept. 3 under legislation revising the state statutes passed by the Legislature.
If convicted of a speeding violation, the new penalties are $50 for 1 to 5 mph over the speed limit; $75 for 6 to 9 mph over, $125 for 10 to 14 mph over, $200 for 15 to 19 mph over, $300 for 20 to 34 mph over and $400 for 35 mph or more over the limit.
Currently, the fines are $10, $25, $75, $125, $200 and $300, respectively.
The fines will be doubled if the violation occurs in a maintenance, repair or construction zone. They will also be doubled if they occur in a school crossing zone.
The changes were part of LB530, which also created the offense of tampering with an electronic monitoring device and allows the Department of Transportation to reduce speed li
