CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - Police in Carbondale, Illinois, are warning the community about a scam involving fake property rental websites.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, in this particular scam, the perpetrators will use images from legitimate rental housing/apartment listings, then add a link that takes you to their fake website, where you will be asked for personal information.

They may also charge you with application and background check fees, and ask you to pay in an unusual manner, such as a wire transfer, through Cryptocurrency, or gift cards.

The Carbondale Police Dept. encourages anyone looking for housing to be cautious and avoid sites that charge fees up front or have offers that seem too good to be true.
