An 8-year-old boy is safe after leaping from the second floor of a burning home in Asbury Park, New Jersey, thanks to the quick actions of police officers and a good Samaritan.

Flames broke out at the home on Aug. 25, sending thick smoke billowing through the neighborhood. While other residents were able to escape on their own, the boy became trapped at a second-story window as the fire rapidly spread.

Police body camera footage captured the harrowing scene as officers and bystanders pleaded with the child to jump. “It’s the most nerve-wracking thing,” said Officer Dewitt Bacon. “We were just trying to get him out and encourage him to trust us to fall in our arms.”
