WARSAW, N.C. (WITN) - Three people from Flint, Michigan, have been named in what authorities say is a multi-state lottery and gift card fraud scheme.

Warsaw police say over the past several months, there have been a series of thefts involving prepaid Visa gift cards and lottery tickets where criminals used deceptive payment tactics to obtain thousands of dollars in goods and winnings.

At local businesses, police say the trio presented non-functioning Cash App or YouTube gift cards, with the stores inadvertently activating them.

In several cases, they escaped with over $5,000 in merchandise each time.

Police say on June 20th and 21st, they targeted numerous stores in Onslow and Duplin counties, including a Sheetz and Best Mart in Warsaw.
