COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) says it has formally requested to participate in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Task Force Model under Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act. As of now, the request has not yet been approved.

The 287(g) Program allows local law enforcement agencies to enforce certain aspects of U.S. immigration law with oversight from ICE. Participation would expand authority for state officers to identify and process removable individuals with pending or active criminal charges, enforce limited immigration authorities during routine duties, and serve and execute administrative warrants for removable aliens in local jails.
