DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WREX) — Planning a road trip across Illinois for the unofficial end of summer? You can expect a lot of company.

The Illinois Tollway anticipates nearly 8.2 million cars will be on the tollways during the Labor Day weekend, urging drivers to slow down, especially in construction zones.

Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse emphasized safety, asking drivers to prioritize it by keeping to posted speed limits through work zones, which may feature new traffic patterns and construction workers.

Construction continues on the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and other areas, with many temporary lane closures suspended between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2 to aid holiday travelers. Still, some work will persist behind barriers.
