DAVIESS CO. — The Indiana Department of Health has confirmed that mosquito samples in Daviess County have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). In response, local health officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito-borne illness.
The Daviess County Health Department is increasing its treatment efforts in the affected areas. Residents are advised to protect themselves by taking the following steps:
Use EPA-approved insect repellents .
Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
Avoid exposure during dusk and dawn, the peak biting times for the Culex mosquito species, which is the primary carrier of the virus.
Eliminate standing water around homes by cleaning gutters, emptying containers, and maintaining yards to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
