CLAY COUNTY — A small airplane has reportedly crashed in Clay County.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says the Cessna C340 went down near Northeast 140th Street and Rhodus Road while trying to land at the Midwest National Air Center just before noon Wednesday.

Preliminary information indicates the plane may have came from an airport outside of the St. Louis area, according to the sheriff's office. When deputies arrived the aircraft was engulfed in flames in a soybean field. The two occupants inside were killed in the crash. Air traffic at the airport remains closed until 5 p.m. while the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff's office has notified the FAA and NTSB. The NTSB will soon take over the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
