At least two confirmed cases of distemper are halting adoptions here at the greater Birmingham Humane Society, BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has confirmed two cases of distemper, leading to a temporary halt in dog adoptions as they test animals for the disease.

The shelter reported that the two confirmed cases had come into contact with a wild raccoon.

A highly infectious virus, distemper targets the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs and other animals.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, symptoms of distemper include:

Discharge from the eyes and nose

Fever

Coughing

Lethargy

Reduced appetite
