Alberta is introducing a new levy on large-scale data centres, aiming to balance investment attraction with returns for Albertans.

The province announced that beginning Dec. 31, 2026, any grid-connected data centres using 75 megawatts of power or greater will be subject to a two per cent levy on computer hardware.

The release notes that the change follows a six-week consultation period with stakeholders.

“Alberta’s government has a duty to ensure Albertans receive a fair deal from data centre investments," said Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation in the release. "This approach strikes a balance that we believe is fair to industry and Albertans, while protecting Alberta's competitive advantage.”
