Most Alberta students are set to return to school next week, but a teachers' strike may interrupt classes now that contract negotiations have broken down between Alberta's teachers and the association representing school boards.

Teachers would have to provide 72-hour strike notice, and further negotiations are possible.

"The goal of bargaining is always to reach a negotiated settlement; however, with the strike mandate provided by teachers in June, which expires on October 7, 2025, the clock is ticking on our ability to reach a deal without labour action," said the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA), in a statement.
