EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut leaders reminded drivers to watch out for both children and school buses as Wednesday marked the first day of school in East Hartford.

Officials, ranging from the school administration to the U.S. Senate, urged safety at a press conference at Pitkin Elementary School in East Hartford. The town said they will see over 6,500 children return to school.

“Today is the first day of school and there are lots of kids out there," said Laosie King, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, or CTDOT. "They are walking and biking and waiting for the bus and we really want to remind the public to slow down and look out for kids.”
