WEST FARGO — Being prepared for school shootings is part of the training police, teachers and students have to go through.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, there was a horrific reminder of the need for that training, when two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed and 17 others were injured in a shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School and Church in southwest Minneapolis.

The active shooter training is something schools hope to never use, but they have to be prepared, local officials said.

Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner said in an emergency, the three common responses are flight, fight and freeze, and most people freeze in these situations.

The training law enforcement and schools do gives teachers the tools to protect themselves and their students from what Jahner called a “sick” reality.
