ALBANY, Ore. - Albany Fire Department tackled multiple natural cover fires in Simpson Park beginning on Saturday and continuing through Tuesday, according to fire officials.

These incidents were reported on Aug. 23, 24, and 26. Albany fire officials said that these fires posed immediate risks to life and property. The fires were challenging to extinguish due to the dense vegetation and underground smoldering. All fires occurred in the same area, which showed signs of being used as an encampment by the houseless population. The landscape contained thick blackberries, small trees, and fallen limbs.

On Aug. 26, firefighters discovered areas of underground burning emitting embers and heat. Traditional extinguishment methods failed, necessitating heavy equipment.
