MADISON, Wis. -- Interim no more, John Patterson will be Madison's Chief of Police.

The Police and Fire Commission on Wednesday voted to give Patterson the permanent job. Patterson had been serving as interim chief since Shon Barnes left the department in February to lead the Seattle Police Department.

Patterson has been with the Madison Police Department for nearly 30 years and previously served as an assistant police chief.

The PFC chose Patterson over Capt. Stephanie Drescher, who is a training captain with MPD, and Milwaukee Assistant Police Chief Steven Johnson.
