The “Great Alaskan stare down” is over, and the world finds itself no better off from this brief encounter of the worst kind.

As a result of this meaningless get-together, nobody is any safer, the conflict in Ukraine remains endless, and President Donald Trump is no closer to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

But since there must be a winner and loser in these gatherings, one must award points to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has come out of hiding to regain a presence on the world stage. What’s more, without conceding anything and without the threat of economic sanctions, he’s now free to slaughter many more innocents at his leisure.

And then there’s Trump, who at his best did a lousy impersonation of Neville Chamberlain and at his worst sold Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
