WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A significant Medicaid billing error has led to Kansas school districts needing to return millions of dollars in overpaid funds.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reported that the issue stemmed from a data mistake that had gone unnoticed for several years. As a result, the state is reclaiming over $11 million from school districts across the state.

While most districts owe less than $25,000, Wichita Public Schools faces a substantial repayment of $3.1 million.

Upon being notified of the overpayment, USD 259 opted to repay the amounts in four quarterly installments, using unrestricted reserve funds to cover the costs.
