Ijust read the article about the 14-year-old boy on an electric dirt bike who became our 54th traffic fatality, and I feel that there are things left unsaid.

To begin with, these types of vehicles are powered electric cycles with no pedals for propulsion, so they are not electric bicycles that need to be registered. Nor are they considered traditional mopeds, which need to be registered and inspected. They are much closer to being “light motorcycles.”

A type 2 driver’s license, registration, safety check and insurance are needed to operate motorcycles, but the state and county have not made clear that many out-of-class two-wheeled electric vehicles share those requirements. As a result, they can be found on the roads (and sidewalks) all over our island. There needs to be clearer rules go
