The Aug. 21 article about the traffic death of a Campbell High School student demands clarification of our traffic laws (“Teen death occurs as traffic fatalities rise,” Star-Advertiser) . Honolulu Police Department interim Chief Rade Vanic’s advice regarding speed limit, seat belts and the like failed to address the use of pedestrian crosswalks by bicyclists.
Bicyclists should use crosswalks only as pedestrians by getting off of and pushing their bikes. Drivers of Harley-Davidsons or similar ilk would never think of using crosswalks, but for some reason bicyclists feel it’s OK.
The article also mentioned the death in March 2024 of two bicyclists in a marked crosswalk two blocks from the recent tragedy.
