Daniil Medvedev has been fined $42,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse during his first-round match at the U.S. Open. The fine represents nearly 40% of the $110,000 he earned for participating in the tournament.

The penalties were issued after Medvedev's outburst during his match against Benjamin Bonzi on Sunday. He received $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse. The incident occurred when a photographer stepped onto the court just as Bonzi was preparing to serve. This disruption prompted chair umpire Greg Allensworth to allow Bonzi another first serve, which infuriated Medvedev.

Medvedev confronted Allensworth, shouting, "Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you shaking?" He also remarked, "He wants to go home, guys, he doesn’t like it here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour." The crowd reacted with boos and jeers, leading to a six-minute delay in play.

Despite the chaos, Medvedev managed to win the third and fourth sets but ultimately lost the match in five sets. After the match, he was seen hitting his racket against his bench in frustration.

In the aftermath, Medvedev's friend and fellow player Andrey Rublev expressed his willingness to support him. "If he wants to change and needs help, he has me, a lot of other friends and family that will help him," Rublev said. He added that Medvedev needs time to process his emotions after a tough loss.

Frances Tiafoe, another American player, commented on Medvedev's struggles, noting that his frustrations likely stem from early exits in major tournaments this year. Tiafoe said, "He holds himself to a super high standard. He’s been struggling and he’s struggling to face the music, right?"

This incident marks Medvedev's third consecutive first-round exit in Grand Slam tournaments, including a previous loss to Bonzi at Wimbledon last month.
