WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week threatening to block federal funds from states and local governments that have “substantially eliminated cash bail as a potential condition of pretrial release from custody for crimes that pose a clear threat to public safety and order, including offenses involving violent, sexual, or indecent acts, or burglary, looting, or vandalism.”
In Kentucky, bail is set by the judicial system, and the state does not have a cashless bail system, according to the Kentucky Justice & Public Safety Cabinet.
State Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Middletown, who is also an attorney, said he supports the president’s efforts to combat crime and does not expect Kentucky to be impacted by the order.
