A fisherman mauled by a grizzly bear near Cardston, Alta., is expected to recover after being treated in hospital.

Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services said the attack happened Saturday afternoon along the St. Mary River, south of Cardston. The man was fishing when the bear charged and attacked him.

Officials with Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services believe the incident was a defensive encounter. The sow had two older cubs with her at the time.

The angler was first taken to Cardston Hospital, then transferred to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. He was released the following day.
