GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Governor McMaster, who originally prosecuted the case, spoke about a competency hearing for an Upstate man on death row.
The decision of whether the execution for Steven Bixby is in the hands of a judge.
Bixby was convicted of killing two law enforcement officers in 2007, along with with a string of other charges. He said he was angry over the state’s plans to widen a highway onto his family’s property.
Bixby has spent nearly 20 years on death row but his execution was put on old earlier in 2025. The state chose to pause it because of questions over Bixby’s mental state.
In court, a judge heard from several medical experts who evaluated Bixby. Then Bixby himself addressed the judge saying his actions were not a crime and even blame the officers he kill
