With almost all of the school districts in Alberta welcoming children back to the halls, many municipalities are reminding residents that school zones are back in effect.
School zones are active during school hours and drivers are required to reduce their speed to 30 kilometres per hour when within school zones.
Additionally, those driving regularly on rural roads are reminded that passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop sign is extended is illegal and is subject to a fine of over $500 and six demerit points.
The only exception to this rule is when the bus is on the opposite side of a two-way highway divided by a median.
Yellow lights on school busses indicate that the bus is preparing to stop and students will either be getting on or off of the bus.
