KINGSPORT, Tennessee — A new baby box is set to open in Kingsport, giving parents in crisis a safe option to surrender a baby.
The box, located at a fire station at 3017 S. John B. Dennis Highway, will open Friday, Aug. 29, with a blessing ceremony at noon.
Several officials, including representatives from Safe Haven Baby Boxes, and two county commissioners, are set to attend the blessing.
There are 369 Safe Haven Baby Box locations in the country, according to Safe Haven Baby Boxes representatives.
The latest addition in Kingsport marks the 23rd box in Tennessee. When a child is left at one of the boxes, firefighters at the station will get a notification and get the baby to the proper authorities.
