MINOT — The most disgusting thing about mass shootings, such as the one just inflicted on the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, is the cruel violence.

The second most disgusting thing is the arms race which takes place after an incident like this, with America's various political and cultural factions beating down doors to find out about the personal characteristics of the perpetrator so they can be curated to fit their preferred worldview.

Are they white, or do they have another skin color? What is their religious background? Are their politics to the right or to the left? Even when the ideology of the shooter is so incoherent as to defy categorization, everyone from your local Facebook pundits to national political figures agonizes over whatever manifestos or social media
