RICHMOND, Indiana — A Richmond woman has been arrested after allegedly stealing an ambulance after requesting to be taken to the hospital.

Amanda Kirkendall, 43, faces formal charges of auto theft and resisting law enforcement using a vehicle, according to online court records.

The incident began shortly after midnight Thursday, Aug. 28 when a woman approached staff at the Wayne County Jail asking to be taken to the hospital. As officers arrived to assist responding medics, the woman jumped into the ambulance that had arrived and drove off, the Richmond Police Department said in a statement .

That led to a police chase, which ended at a local hospital, the department said.
