WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita civil rights activist Mary Dean is suing the City of Wichita and city political figures for removing her from a City Council meeting earlier this month.

Also named in the lawsuit are mayor Lily Wu, city manager Robert Layton, city attorney Jennifer Magana and members of Wichita’s City Council.

Dean alleges the city discriminated against her and committed a civil rights violation when she was removed from the City Council meeting on Aug. 7.

Dean had exceeded her speaking time of five minutes and refused to sit down during time for public comment. She has been the city’s most vocal advocate for reparations for Wichita’s Black residents.

In January, Wu responded to Dean’s call for reparations.
