A San Mateo man suffered serious injuries Wednesday afternoon when he was stabbed on the platform at Caltrain's Redwood City Station, officials said.

The stabbing happened just before 5 p.m. on the southbound platform, according to Caltrain and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. The victim was taken to a local trauma center to be treated.

Preliminary information suggests the stabbing was an isolated incident, the sheriff's office said, adding that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

It wasn't immediately known what led up to the stabbing.

The sheriff's office said deputies and detectives were working to identify the suspect.
