COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) - A police chief in South Carolina was reportedly involved in a crash while driving a patrol car on Wednesday.

Officials told sister-station said that Steve Jonas -- chief of the South Congaree Police Department -- was driving on in Columbia when he crossed the center line and hit a GMC SUV.

Three people in the GMC were taken to the hospital, as was Jonas. WIS reported that the chief has since been released. The extent of injuries sustained by people in the GMC was not publicly known.

A South Congaree town spokesperson told WIS that Jonas was placed on administrative leave, which the spokesperson said is standard any time an officer is involved in some type of investigation. A lieutenant will reportedly fill in for Jonas during his absence.
