LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A judge set bail at $5 million for a California man accused of scamming at least one person out of $200,000, allegedly luring them in with phony alerts on their computer, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Zhicong Chen, 27, faces theft charges connected to several incidents in 2023, documents said.

In September 2023, a person reported to Las Vegas Metro police that they were “the victim of a complex scheme to defraud [them] of $179,000,” documents said. The victim told police the scheme began when he received an alert on his laptop to call a phone number he believed was for a Microsoft help line.
