Niagara’s unemployment rate declined in July to one of its lowest levels in recent years — but overall employment and labour force participation remained subdued, particularly among younger workers.

Monthly labour data from Workforce Collective showed Niagara’s jobless rate ticked down 0.1 per cent to 6.3 per cent from June — well below Ontario’s 8.4 per cent and slightly lower than typical summer figures for Niagara.

Educational services was again in the top industry spot for job postings, with 678. It was followed by retail trade (610) and health care and social assistance (440).

The hospitality sector ranked fourth in postings, though “we usually expected that to be a little higher,” said Thalia Semplonius, project and research lead.
