LOWVILLE, New York (WWNY) - Flags at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office are flying half staff, in the wake of a shooting at a Catholic school Wednesday in Minnesota.

Two children, ages 8 and 10 died. At least 17 others were injured.

“We have to stop about this, party divisiveness.” said Lewis County Sheriff Mike Carpinelli. “The mentality of ‘Well, I don’t think guns are good,’ or anything like that. What’s going to protect and save your child? That’s the bottom line.”

Carpinelli went to Facebook, asking if people are ready to address what he calls weaknesses in schools, bringing up the long-debated topic of arming teachers.

“I know that that’s a controversy here in the state of New York,” he said, “but in other states, they do.”

He also suggested providing more mental health resources
